From May 16 to 17, annual seminar of 2009 on strategic research was held. The leaders of GIG, members of the committee of the strategic development and planning, members of the Committee of academic research of GIG attended the seminar. During the seminar, three main topics, the next decade development of strategic objectives positioning, the adjustments and new orientations for discipline development, and the key scientific issues and development goals, was discussed. After an intensive argue on how to manage a PI group, how to establish a research teams, how to evaluate scientists’ work in an employment period, how to train young personnel and the management of post-graduate, some common senses on strategic positioning and development goals of GIG were achieved, a set of feasibly regulations were proposed on academic title promotion, funding and training system of young people and so on.The strategy seminar is a comprehensive outlook to future development of GIG in recent years, analyses the existing problems in depth. Many delegates proposed lots of constructive comments and suggestions on future development, which broaden the thinking and deepen the understanding, clear the direction of endeavors, and enhance a sense of responsibility, mission and urgency. The meeting will be an effective way to promote the research work being carried out in-depth, and play a strategic role in promoting the future development of GIG.
