Outline
As the first key lab of its type established in Guangdong Province, this laboratory was jointly founded by Chinese Academy of Sciences and Guangdong Provincial Government in 1993 and basically affiliated with State Key Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry under Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It was established and accepted in 1995. With financial support from the Phase II Construction Fund for Guangdong Key Laboratories in 2001, and technical support from SKLOG, the installation and construction of this laboratory were further enhanced, hence it was rated for excellence in two related appraisals. Right now, this laboratory is one of the most influential laboratories dedicated to research in organic pollution of environment in China.
Research orientations:
Research orientations for this laboratory were refined based on requirements for economic and social development and technological advances for environmental protection in Guangdong Province and on the status quo of the frontier research fields in international environmental sciences, and include the following:
- environmental scientific study on toxic organic pollutants (including POPs, Eds and VOCs, etc.);
- applied and basic study on environmental pollution control and related high-tech research and development.

Objectives:
We’re striving to build GD Key Laboratory of Utilization and Protection of Environmental Resources into a famous laboratory that is first rate in China and influential internationally in environmental science field on toxic organic pollutants, and a key base for high-tech research and development in environmental pollution control in Guangdong Province.
Research achievements:
- Important progresses have been made in study of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Pearl River delta region;
- Desired progresses have been made in scientific and technological development in environmental pollution control;
In the past five years, nearly 230 papers were published in academic journals in both China and foreign countries, and nearly 100 Ph.D. and M.Sc. graduate students were educated here. In 2003, one of the projects undertaken by this laboratory was awarded gold prize in science and technology in Guangdong Province.
Impact and application of research achievements:
The research achievements were cited by the International Convention Program on POPs as organized, stipulated and implemented by UNEP and GEF in 2002, and the Pearl River delta region was regarded as an area that enjoys comprehensive and complete information on POPs research among 11 countries in Central Asia and Northeast Asia;
The research achievements were also integrated into the consulting report “On the status quo of environmental pollution and the countermeasures for pollution control in the economically developed regions in coastal areas” by the Geoscience Division of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2002, received written instructions from state leaders like ZENG Peiyan and CHEN Zhili, etc., and constituted important references to the stipulation of the medium to long term scientific and technological planning and environmental protection planning in China;
The proposal for further study on POPs as advanced by Academician FU Jiamo was well regarded by the China National Science Foundation (CNSF) and has been listed among the geoscience categories that can receive CNSF’s key funding in the tenth five-year plan period. In 2004, the major project “Biogeochemical processes of POPs and their impact toward organisms in low latitude areas” as applied by this laboratory was approved for funding by China National Science Foundation (CNSF).
In regard to status quo of pollution in rivers and streams in Guangzhou, study on the application of compound photosynthetic bacteria preparation in water purification was carried out, a modifying agent aiming to control pollution in bottom mud was prepared, a practical technical system, mainly based on biological rehabilitation and for improvement of the quality of water in rivers and streams, was developed, and a related demonstration project was set up.
Perspective:
We’re striving with our strenuous effort to build GD Key Laboratory of Utilization and Protection of Environmental Resources into an internationally first rate laboratory in environmental scientific study on toxic organic pollutants (including persistent organic pollutants, environmental interferents and volatile organic compounds) in a certain period.
