Set up in May 2002 and put into operation in January 2003, Guangzhou Mass Spectrometer Center was jointly founded by Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of National Land Resources and Guangdong Provincial Government. Guangzhou Mass Spectrometer Center is affiliated with Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, while the State Key Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry and CAS Key Laboratory of Isotope Geochronology and Geochemistry are held responsible for its operation. The core instruments at Guangzhou Mass Spectrometer Center consist of laser ablation microprobe, multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LAM-MC-ICPMS, jointly founded by Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of National Land Resources) and high resolution gas chromatograph and high resolution mass spectrometer (HRGC-HRMS, jointly founded by Chinese Academy of Sciences and Guangdong Provincial Government) as well as more than 10 organic mass spectrometers and inorganic mass spectrometers of various
types. Guangzhou Mass Spectrometer Center is mainly engaged in separation and identification of compounds of extremely trace amount, separation and identification of organic compounds, separation and identification of polar compounds, isotopic determination of organic compounds, solid isotopic determination of Sr, Nd, Pb, Hf, etc. in various kinds of geological and environmental samples, and determination of stable isotopes such as C, H, O, N and rare gas isotope Ar. At Guangzhou Mass Spectrometer Center, not only tracing, evaluation and basic theoretical study of organic environment types and organic energy sources can be carried out but also isotopic dating, tracing, evaluation, prospecting and related basic theoretical study of various kinds of geological bodies and inorganic environments types can be conducted. It is planned that Guangzhou Mass Spectrometer Center, as a technological platform for national scientific research, shall be built into a high level applied research center, a talent education center and an authoritative analytical and testing service center that is opened to scientists from all the countries in the world.
